blog

I thought using blogger was actually very efficient.  I definitely prefer it over a journal and it seems to act in the same manner.  I would recommend this to classes in the future.  It makes the assigned blog easy to get done and there shouldn't be any reason why you couldnt't do it.  I really liked the way how the layout is setup so you can easily post things.  Blogger is a definite plus for me

workshop activities

I didn't find these activities helpful at all to me.  They were ok, but I found the best review strategy to be when we all got into the rectangle and heard what the person had to say and then told them what we thought.  I don't like doing one on one peer reviews because I don't feel people give honest opinions.  If the entire class hears your thesis and main points it will be easier to take advice from the group as a whole then like we did on Tuesday.  That is just my opinion of course.

thanksgiving

My thanksgiving break will consist of shopping and spending time with family.  I am planning on going to sioux falls because my aunt lives in crooks which is very close.  I am excited for black friday because there are tons of sales and I love to shop.  I also am very thankful for everything that I have and I am excited to celebrate it on thanksgiving.  I will also be getting a new phone because when I was sick I layed it next to me and there was a cup of water next to my bed that it fell into.  It must have fallen at the perfect angle to fall into the glass.  It made me sooo mad!!!!

paper

I thought the paper was relatively easier to write than the RBAA.  It wasn't as long and i liked the topic of Omelas. I found Le Guin's piece to be very interesting and I hope that class next semester will have interesting pieces to read.  I'm not quite sure what we were supposed to blog about but this is what I blogged about because I was gone.

thesis

Le Guin's "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" interprets a strong message by displaying a connection of human ignorance to our society today.

reading critically

After reading through the stories critically, it gave me a better understanding of how the white heron was a symbol as well as the yellow wallpaper.  I thought that it was harder and more time consuming than reading the piece, but in the end it is well worth it because you understand the piece entirely and it is preparing me for future English classes.  My favorite story we have read so far is Omelas and I hope to do my Literary Analysis about it.  Reading critically has definitely helped me so far and I believe it will also help me in the future.

symbols

I found the symbols in the White Heron very disturbing.  The tree you could obviously tell stood for the man after Lindsey pointed it out.  It was just creepy how it described a sexual scene.  I was totally oblivious to the entire thing.  The white heron seemed to stand for like pure, so almost like a symbol of a virgin.  The girl maybe didn't want to tell the guy where the bird was because of this reason because she wanted to lose her virginity.  Another symbol in the story could be the wallpaper.  The wallpaper is a huge part of the story, and it is almost like it mesmerizes the narrator. I think the author of the White Heron had a very sick point of view.   In the yellow wallpaper I felt that the house used to be a psychiatric ward.  The chains were a symbol to represent this.  The scratches and marks on the wall were also good representations of this.  The girl in the story seems to be getting worse and worse and I kind of feel like she is dreaming that she is at her house, but she is really living in a psych ward where her husband comes and visits a lot.

women in 1900s

Clemente, Deirdre."Prettier Than They Used to Be": Femininity, Fashion, and the Recasting of Radcliffe's Reputation, 1900-1950.New England Quarterly; Dec2009, Vol. 82 Issue 4, p637-666, 30p
As women gained more rights they gained the right to be able to attend college. This right brought a new look on how woman were viewed. As women gained equal rights to men they were viewed as less attractive.  This seems silly to me today because today women are looked upon as sexieir when they are working and having equal rights to men.  The 1900s gave women many rights as the years passed by.  It showed how different the views from the past were compared to today.  I'm very glad our rights as women have evolved since the 1900s.

readings

The readings were really interesting.  My favorite one was the most dangerous game because it is very mysterious and keeps you guessing.  I like the twist at the end when Rainsford is in General Zaroffs bedroom waiting for him.  I also thought it was pretty cool my name was in it.  I have read both the stories we were assigned in high school in my English classes.  We did like a huge group project my freshman year about the most dangerous game and spent a lengthy amount of time talking about it.  The occurence at owl bridge was interesting also because the entire time I believed that he had actually gotten away, but in reality it would be nearly impossible to dodge that many bullets and even a cannon.  Both stories were interesting and was I was glad they were assigned to read.

Le Guine

I thought the piece was extemely weird.  I just didn't really understand it that well and I thought it was interesting but kind of creepy.  I have no idea why they would keep a child locked up in a cellar and barely feed him.  It just makes no sense.  It just shows the ignorance of some people today.  They put the kid in the cellar because they didn't know what else to do with him, but it just seems dumb because they didn't want to deal with the problem they just shove it in the corner.  This is how some people deal with their problems today and it just shows in this story through a metaphor that people are very ignorant.

paper

The RBAA paper I'm writing is going to be good I hope.  I have found some pretty good sources from the library and they were reasonably easy to find.  I'm glad I picked the topic of the court system being unfair because I didn't have to try very hard to find sources, but with the the debate topic we had the sources were extremely hard to find.  I hope that the sentence-level corrections go over better this time.  I like the way our papers our organized with the comments and how it tells us which sentence to do each correction on.

semester

The semester is going by extremely fast.  I'm way excited to see how my papers are graded.  I really like the way we do the rectangle in class.  I don't like talking in class because I feel like i get interrupted and put down everytime I say something.  I do like English class tho, and I hope to further my writing skills and be able to write a collegiate paper by the end of the semester.  I like to do the things on the internet that help with grammar and commas.

topic

I am debating between two different topics.  I either want to do why i think the court system is unfair or teenage bullying.  I have also considered the topic why has facebook become so popular and what are the pros and cons.  I am not sure which topic I am going to pick, but I have good info to back them all up.

topics

One of the topics I came up with that make me mad is the court system.  The court sysstem makes me mad becasue because I feel like they are very unfair in certain situations.  I feel that every person that does the same crime should have the same punishment to be fair.  I can see that the counterargument would be that some circumstances would be different, so I think we should take this into consideration as we make the justice system better.  Another thing that angers me is when there are no signs and your car gets towed.  It is extremely annoying that they don't post any signs, and then they just tow you without reason really.

presentation

I felt that my part of the presentation went well becasue I feel like I'm not afraid to talk in front of people and I like to do class presentations depending on what they are.  I was a little scared when I entered the room because I didn't know what to expect, but after finishing the entire thing I felt good.  I was also very happy with the grade I received.

revision

I revised Hailey's paper and I thought the outlines were a great idea for the revision strategy.  I thought Nicole did a really good job on rating my paper and I thought she was very honest.

revision strategies

Our group is doing revision strategies 10.11 through 10.15 we each did one except i did 2 cuz i told my group i didn't care and now we r goin to meet in the library and discuss a strategy to give our presentation.  I'm kind of scared to give this presentation because we had a sub on tuesday so i'm not really sure what to expect.  I just want to get it over with and hope we do well.

thesis stament

Finding a job isn’t always as easy as it looks.  The point of this problem is trying to find a solution that will suit a person who is having trouble finding a job.  These are my two main sentences that create my thesis.  I hope to prove in this paper that finding a job is hard with a lot of competition around.  You must be well-prepared for the interview and must have a great resume if you are planning on getting a good position.  I just wanna show people that there is a solution to this problem if you were work hard at it.

Proposal

My proposal topic ended up being about finding a job in vermillion.  I chose this topic because I am currently looking for a job and with the economy being so terrible and the rise of population it is definitely way harder to find a job in vermillion than it is in my hometown.  I hope that through doing research on my paper I can find a job that I'm looking for.

100 people screwing up america

I felt that this piece was very blundt about the topic and ideas.  I didn't love it especially the beginning part because I felt it was hard to follow.  I felt this because I didn't know who the people were they were talking about in the beginning.  I would probably not read it again unless I had to, but some pieces can be read twice and liked the second time.  I just felt this wasn't my type of reading that I like, although I didn't completely hate it.

revision

I feel that peer revision always helps because it gives you another person's opinion on the piece.  I liked the different arrange of topics we could pick from and definitely thought I wrote about something meaningful to me.  I'm more worried about the whole idea of our paper being critiqued than anything.  I love hearing opinions on stuff though.  Overall I think it went well and helped everyone in the class out.

if i die young

If i were to die tomorrow, my contribution to the world would not have been big, but my contribution to my town would have been huge.  I would not go down in history as anything special, but I would be remembered as the crazy, bubbly, ougoing, spontaneous, girl that loved to dance.  In my town I wasn't an outcast because people became used to the crazy-way i dressed and the wild things I did.  I was known for being involved in many things in our school and I achieved good grades.  If I died, I feel I would be missed, but people would move on with their lives...cuz death is a regular part of life.  I titled my blog if i die young for 2 reasons.  One is that I love that song by the band perry and two is because that's what i would want to happen...if i die young

if i were a boy

If i were a boy...Idk how I would feel. It seems to me that I would play women, but maybe I would treat them like a queen.  Boys can do what they want with no question it atleast seems that way.  It's hard to think of how I would act without actually being in their shoes...if i were a boy

Literacy Narrative

I'm sooo excited!!! I just finished my literacy narrative.  The topic I chose was suicide because my town has had a ton of suicides for as many people that live there.  I can't wait to go over the papers in class.

The Notebook

I read about the notebook.  I seriously love this book and movie.  I feel it has a lot to do with people around us.  It gives us hope that there is actually true love out there, although it is hard to find.  I thought it was a cool perspective how the author wrote that some people would consider this a tragedy and some people would consider it a love story.  I would consider it a sad love story in my own words, but really the ending is bittersweet.

Frederick Douglas story

I read "Learning How to Read and Write" and I enjoyed it.  Most stories like this I would get bored of, but this one seemed interesting to me because it's hard to believe he had to sneak around to learn how to read and write.  These days people are normally required to learn to read and write.  The times have changed a lot since slavery I would say.  It is interesting to realize all the differences from earlier times til now.  I am thankful we do not have to hide if we want to read in public.  I enjoy reading excerpts like this, and hope to read more in the future.

about me

Hey my name is Whitney. I grew up in Gregory, SD. I really like Vermillion and I have a lot of friends that go here.  I'm excited to start all my classes and the get the feel for them.  I hope to make a lot of new friends.  My favorite hobby of all time is dancing.  I would say dancing is my favorite thing ever to do, especially hip hop because i'm pretty good at it.  Well, I hope to get to no everyone well in this class.  Peace out...
